LymeAid UK is a UK based charity to help people who may have Lyme Borreliosis (Lyme Disease). The primary objective of LymeAid UK is to provide grants to people on low income who suspect they have Lyme Borreliosis for private overseas testing for the disease.
A positive Lyme test is the difference for most people between getting treatment on the NHS or not; or being able to successfully fundraise for and obtain private treatment or not. The charity is required as the NHS test is insufficient and often gives false negative results, NHS doctors, however, dispute this. Results speak for themselves though - check out our patient stories to see how positive Lyme tests have changed people's lives.
Lyme is known as a great imitator - the symptoms resemble those seen in many other diseases including myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis. Hence doctors rely heavily on tests to distinguish what is responsible for a patient's symptoms. If a Lyme test gives a false negative, this can result in misdiagnosis of another disease such as ME/CFS which cannot be tested for (it is a diagnosis of exclusion). What is even more damaging for the patient is that this results in no proper treatment. Lyme is treatable, but only if the doctor knows to treat it. With up to half a million people in the UK suspected to have ME/CFS symptoms how many people have missed their Lyme diagnosis and their chance to have their life back?
LymeAid UK is currently in the process of winding down operations and will not be accepting further fundraising or applications.
